Birthdays galore

BEAULIEU - A special orphanage has seen three of its babies turn a year older in the past few weeks.

Michelle Hinrichsen, coordinator of fundraising at the Botshabelo orphanage, said the staff and children love birthdays, so naturally there has been a lot of excitement around the home.

“T has been with us since October 2012, A since November 2012 and N since July 2012,” said Hinrichsen, explaining that the names of the children could not be revealed due to the sensitivity of their cases.

All three children got a birthday cake, chips and a special party hat. The home also brought the children presents. “Celebrating birthdays is always a joy as we are delighted to share in this special occasion with each child. First birthdays are always interesting as the children don’t really know what to do with a wrapped gift. Once they get the hang of ripping the paper, they become very excited,” Hinrichsen said.

A’s family was able to join him on his birthday, which made the day extra special. “They brought him a gift as well. There was much excitement among the children, especially when we brought out the cake with candles. It is a very messy affair especially when they get stuck into the cake. All the children get involved with the party and volunteers come when they can to join in. It was a very festive time for the kids, caregivers and volunteers,” she said.
