Bikers for Nelson Mandela Day

DAINFERN - After the official launch of Bikers for Mandela and the kick-start of the first leg of their trip in Dainfern, the group went on to have a very successful and motivational journey.

The Bikers for Mandela Day journey supported by 1st for Women, was dedicated to taking action against abuse of women and the bikers that participated in the initiative supported the organisations that assist survivors of gender-based violence.

DJ Fresh, Angie Khumalo and Zelda la Grange, the patron of the 1st for Women insurance trust, joined the bikers on their journey. From Fourways the bikers headed to Mahikeng in the North West Province. There, the group visited LifeLine where the team helped create a vegetable garden and R100 000 was donated to the crisis centre. The following day the bikers drove to Botswana, where they teamed up with the Botswana Bikers Society to assist a survivor of abuse.

“Mandela Day is a call to action for individuals, for people everywhere, to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Madiba did. By visiting Botswana we hoped to encourage our neighbours to give 67 minutes of their time on Nelson Mandela Day,” said La Grange.

The bikers drove back to South Africa and headed for Midrand where they visited the Miriam Makeba Centre for Girls. The bikers spent the last leg of their trip in Bloemfontein where they assisted the community with a street cleanup. They also helped with the No Student Hungry campaign which aimed to raise funds to provide food bursaries for needy students at the University of the Free State.
