Low temperatures up stakes for Ark

THE grey sky and icy temperature did not deter puppy lovers from stripping down into bikinis to wash cars on 6 July.

Armed with hose pipes, sponges and car shampoo, volunteers braced the cold and kept their muscles moving to raise funds for puppy rescue shelter, Ark Animal Centre in July’s Bikini Car Wash.

The car wash fundraiser was held outside Outer Limits Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge and as patrons flocked to Durban July Jozi at the restaurant, they dropped their cars off with the car wash volunteers for some spit ‘n polish.
While the centre’s social media manager and fundraiser Candice Eilertsen and volunteers agreed that it was not bikini-wearing weather, they said as long as they kept washing cars for the good cause, it was worth it. They only needed to peer over to the puppy pen to see some of the cute faces to keep their momentum and spirits high.

The puppy pen was the apple of everyone’s eye as drivers parked their cars for a wash and made a bee-line to cuddle one of the puppies. Many people found it difficult to leave their favourite puppies alone.

Ark Animal Centre has just moved to its new location on Cedar Road and is aiming to build a new shelter for its young pups. Funds generated from the car wash as well as from the centre’s Buy-A-Brick campaign will go towards the shelter.

The centre is also building a ‘wall of fame’ called the Archangel Wall of Honour to acknowledge those individuals or companies who contribute by inscribing their names or company logos on the wall depending on the number of bricks they purchase.

The puppy rescue shelter caters for puppies and pregnant dogs and has many puppies looking for permanent homes.
