Community invited to K60 meeting

PAULSHOF - Friends of Rietfontein will host a public meeting to discuss the proposed K60 Road through Paulshof.

The meeting is scheduled for 4 May at Rietfontein Reserve on Holkam Road in Paulshof.

The organisation has organised the meeting for community members and community-based organisations to voice their opinions in an open forum without the influence of councillors, consultants or city council.

Interested and affected parties were urged to register by 30 April as the public participation process would soon be underway.

A full Environmental Impact Assessment will be conducted too.
The proposed road would be an extension of the K60 road in Sunninghill, which ends at Rivonia Road. The new extension would start at Rivonia Road, run through Paulshof and Clayoven to meet Witkoppen Road after the intersection of Witkoppen Road and Main Road. The road reserve has been demarcated for years.

Residents have varying opinions of the proposed road. Some said it would stimulate property values, but others logged objections due to the noise and air pollution and potential crime spike the road could bring.

FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre would also object to the road which would cut off the north-western border of the Rietfontein Reserve and run close to the centre.
Animal manager at the centre Nicci Wright said this would not be conducive to rehabilitating animals.

Another major environmental concern was that the road would cut through the Rietfontein Ridge and damage the green lung.
