Their dogs are their very best friends

Fourways Review attended the market day of the SA Guide Dogs Association for the Blind and asked dog owners what role their dogs play in their lives. This is what they had to say...

Candice James, Ward 93 councillor, says her two bulldogs are her babies and she loves them so much. "They just bring such joy and laughter to our lives, they love to cuddle and they will always have a special place in my heart."

Pieter van Niekerk, head of public relations at the SA Guide Dogs Association for the Blind says his dogs have been an important part of his life over the past 30 years. Van Niekerk, who is visually impaired, says his dogs give him independence, mobility, companionship and dignity. “They really make my life extremely happy.”

Thabang Kotsi trains visually impaired people to walk with their canes and says she has witnessed the difference dogs make in peoples lives. “Not only do guide dogs play a massive role in the lives of those who are visually impaired but also [in the lives of] those around them,” said Kotsi. “They say that dogs are good to have and that they assist them to be more mobile.”

Moe Ebrahim, a community member, said his dogs are his best friends. His favourite thing is to take his best friends for a lot of walks.

Linda Wilkins from the Sandton Community Police Forum (CPF) says her dogs play a big role in her daily life and her family loves having them around.
