Midrand, South Africa’s fastest broadband suburb

JOBURG - Midrand has been rated South Africa's top broadband suburb with an average speed of 10.92 megabytes per second.

Midrand is leaps and bounds ahead of the rest of the country in terms of high speed internet services.

The top three suburbs in South Africa in terms of high speed internet access are Midrand with 10.92Mbps, Edenvale with 8.48Mbps and Sandton with 7.00Mbps.

These suburbs have certainly raised the average of the country.

However according to Ookla, the world standard in internet metrics, the average download speed in South Africa is 4.03 Mbps which is far lower than the global average of 13.64 Mbps.

South Africa has generally struggled to compete with countries like South Korea and Japan in broadband access.

This year South Africa occupied the 70th place in the World Economic Forum rankings of 144 countries, according to their ability to benefit from the digital era.

The forum has highlighted that government delays in improving broadband internet access were having a negative effect on South Africa’s economy.

According to Business Day Live, economists stated earlier this year that the economies of countries using digital technology grew faster and created more jobs.

Good broadband internet access in a country made a contribution of between 0.25% and 1.4% to economic growth.
