Raising hope for Layla

LONEHILL - Buttercup Pre-school hopes their giving spirit will help a friend in need.

Four-year-old Layla O’Neill was diagnosed with Ependymoma, a tumour that develops in the tissue of the central nervous system. She was diagnosed in May and her mother, Sharyn O’Neill, explained that they needed to raise a large sum of money in order for Layla to receive the necessary treatment in Houston, Texas.

O’Neill said, “They have an exceptional Proton therapy centre which costs a lot on the medical side of things. Just an example, we need R231 000 for our first consultation which will take three to seven days. We are looking at collecting around R1.8 million in order to get there.”

A Facebook group, Raising Hope For Layla, aims to create awareness and posts about the many fundraising initiatives.

Marli Olivier of Buttercup Pre-school explained that the school heard about Layla through friends and arranged a face-painting day to raise funds for her.

“Buttercup is a pre-school that cares deeply, not just for the Buttercup community, but the whole community, and is always ready to extend a helping hand where needed. Our hearts went out to little Layla when we heard her story and we wanted to help in any way possible,” said Olivier.
