Pikitup suspends workers as strike comes to an end

JOBURG - Pikitup has suspended workers due to an illegal strike that resulted in the disruptions of services in Johannesburg.

Spokesperson Desiree Ntshingila said the waste management company had to bring in additional tractors to cover the backlog and do the usual rounds of waste collection.

“Management worked tirelessly to bring the industrial action to its conclusion and further disciplinary steps will be taken against suspended workers,” she said.

She added that in Randburg and Midrand working employees experienced intimidation, which was dealt with.

“The suspended workers are challenging a court decision that was granted by a judge who ruled in favour of management with regards to a transportation practice that did not form part of the workers condition of employment. This is part of an ongoing effort to achieve efficiencies in the business,” she said.

Ntshingila said Pikitup’s contingency plans saw the company clear 90 percent of the backlog over the past weekends.

She said the company acknowledged that not all areas had been attended to. “Pikitup would like to assure the public that it is working towards normalising operations across all its depots by the end of this week,” she added.

She said a special effort would be made to collect all outstanding refuse and additional waste during the course of the week, and residents and business owners would be consulted with regarding the matter.

Areas where refuse still needs to be collected include:

I Blairgowrie

I Bordeaux

I Linden Extension

I Darrenwood

I Midrand

I Diepsloot

I Ivory Park

I Windsor

I Certain parts of Bryanston

I Northriding

I Yeoville
