Fourways duo secures bronze at the ICF World Marathon Championships in Croatia

Local Paddlers exceled at ICF World Marathon championships in Croatia, securing 30 medals in the sprint as well as the marathon disciplines. Fourways duo of Mark Garden and Matthew Ballenden secured bronze in the Men’s K2 category for racers aged 45 to 49.

Paddlers from Gauteng made South Africa proud at the International Canoe Federation (ICF) World Marathon Championships held in Metkovic, Croatia from September 19 to 22.

Among the standout performers was the Fourways duo of Mark Garden and Matthew Ballenden, who secured a hard-fought bronze medal in the Men’s K2 category for racers aged 45 to 49. Their achievement is a testament to the dedication and skill of South African paddlers, who faced tough competition on the world stage.

“Participants from various clubs and lakes around the region showcased their skills in one of the most prestigious events on the international paddling calendar.

“Each year, paddlers from across South Africa compete in local provincial selection races, which lead to national trials that ultimately determine the team representing the country at international events.

“This year’s championships featured a variety of disciplines, including sprints, short, fast Olympic-style races, and marathons, where athletes must navigate long distances, including challenging portages that test their agility and speed as they transport their boats on land,” said media liaison of the Gauteng Canoe Union Jennie Dallas.

The South African team demonstrated impressive prowess, bringing home a total of 30 medals, and showcasing the fine talents laboriously nurtured through years of training and local competitions.

Team manager of the Gauteng Canoe Union Elandrie Zietsman expressed her pride in the athletes’ achievements. “Congratulations to the South African Masters who represented our country at the ICF Canoe World Marathon Championships in Metkovic. Their incredible performance over the past few days has been nothing short of exceptional.
