Family’s heartbreak used as a warning to others as both their dogs die of suspected poisoning

Michee Buta-Muya’s family in Lonehill lost two dogs to suspected poisoning within two weeks, showing similar symptoms. They now want to raise awareness to other animal lovers.

A tragic turn of events has left the family of Michee Buta-Muya in Lonehill, shattered after their beloved dogs fell victim to suspected poisoning, sounding the alarm for fellow animal lovers to remain vigilant.

He said their two dogs fell ill within a two-week period and they had similar symptoms. The first dog, 11 years old, showed refusal to eat, black stool, extreme weakness, and rapid decline.

“Initially, we thought it was age-related, but when our second dog, eight years old and energetic, displayed the same symptoms, we suspected poisoning. The second dog’s condition escalated quickly over the weekend, and despite administering medication, he passed away.”

He said even though they didn’t perform an autopsy due to the first dog’s age, their vet suspected poisoning. For the second dog, “we planned to take him to the vet on Monday, but he passed away on Sunday. No toxic substances were detected, but the rapid decline and similar symptoms suggest poisoning.”

Buta-Muya’s worst fears were raised by a neighbor’s similar experience just weeks prior to his dog’s death. He said the neighbour told him that his dogs were diagnosed with gastroenteritis after eating something bad.

He said the incident raises critical questions about pet safety and the need for increased awareness. By sharing his story, Buta-Muya aims to spark a vital conversation and prevent similar tragedies.

“This incident, combined with our own, raises concerns about potential environmental or intentional harm. We want to raise awareness and warn fellow dog owners to take precautions. The similarity in symptoms and proximity of incidents suggest a larger problem. We hope to prevent further harm and potentially identify the cause.”

Buta-Muya plans to formally report the incident to animal control and law enforcement and also co-ordinate with neighbours to gather information and present a unified concern.

He advises fellow dog owners to “keep a close eye on pets, especially at night, secure food and trash, install security cameras, upgrade fencing and lighting, be vigilant for suspicious activity, and report any concerns to authorities.”
