Warren Mayer tragically passed away, but saved over 18 lives as an organ donor at Fourways Life Hospital.

Warren Meyer, a 43-year-old father of three daughters and devoted husband to Suzette Meyer, passed away tragically after a sudden medical emergency.

Warren was declared brain dead by doctors at Fourways Life Hospital, but died a hero by donating his organs to save the lives of over 18 people, after his wife gave consent for organ donation.

“Warren lived a pretty healthy life, but on the night of July 20, as we settled in for bedtime, everything changed. Warren experienced a cardiac arrest, gasping for breath as he struggled to breathe.

We rushed him to the hospital, where he battled for his life, and on July 25 our world shattered as the doctors delivered the devastating news that Warren was brain dead. They said it was due to lack of oxygen to the brain,” said his devastated wife.

“I was confused; how could this happen as he was healthy? I contemplated seeking further answers through a post-mortem, but then remembered a crucial discussion they had shared long ago. Warren’s deep commitment to being an organ donor. He always hoped to help and save other people’s lives when he died,” explained Meyer.

“Warren was a very generous person, so I was not shocked when he expressed this wish. I am very proud of Warren; he saved over 18 lives, and some of his parts are helping in research through his heroic actions.” Though her heart was heavy with sorrow, Meyer felt a flicker of pride in knowing that her husband’s legacy could live on in such a meaningful way.

In honour of Warren’s life, friends and family joined him at Life Hospital. Everyone lined the corridor outside the ICU, along with the staff of the hospital, in a walk of honour as he made his final journey into the theatre to hand over his gift of life.

As Meyer shares Warren’s story, she wishes to instill hope in others facing the devastating loss of a loved one, and highlights the importance of having discussions about organ donation. “Talk about it with your family; it’s one of the most valuable gifts you can leave behind.”
