In an exciting unity, the Grade 00 learners from Junior College Garden explored the richness of art and culture.

The Grade 00 learners from Junior College Gardens embarked on an exciting inquiry unit focused on Arts and culture. This initiative aims to stimulate young minds, allowing them to engage with various artistic expressions and cultural practices that not only enrich their education but also cultivate vital skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving.

Principal of Junior College Gardens Bianca Durrant emphasised the importance of this learning unit: “Encouraging our youngest learners to explore different cultures through art is imperative. It fosters a mindset of inclusivity and understanding, allowing children to appreciate the rich tapestry of human experience from an early age.

“Early exposure to arts and culture plays a pivotal role in children’s cognitive and social development. Research indicates that engaging with diverse artistic traditions helps young learners interpret and understand the world around them in multifaceted ways. The Grade 00 learners learned that art is not just a form of expression but a powerful medium through which they can explore themes of empathy, appreciation for diversity, and respect for differences among people.”

The journey began with an engaging exploration of cultural foods, where parents contributed delicious dishes from their backgrounds. This culinary experience not only delighted the children’s taste buds but also initiated conversations about the diverse cultural landscapes represented within their community.

Leaners had an opportunity to delve into the world of Zulu artistry. They created their very own Zulu masks, using a variety of art mediums, where each mask became a unique canvas for personal expression. Students also embraced traditional crafts by engaging in beadwork, where they crafted individual bracelets.

This approach enriches their educational experience, as they learn to recognise and appreciate both the differences and similarities among individuals from diverse backgrounds.

“Through the enthusiastic participation of our Grade 00 learners and the support of their families, we are building a foundation for a more understanding and equitable future.
