‘Give a Cane’ campaign rewrites Lindiwe’s story

Lindiwe Tshabalala, a teacher at the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf, inspires many. Despite losing her sight and hearing at 15, she never let her disabilities define her.

Lindiwe Tshabalala is a teacher who embodies courage and hope.

Even though she lost her sight and hearing at the tender age of 15, Tshabalala has never let her disabilities define who she is and where she wants to be in life.

She has risen above her challenges to become an inspiring educator at the Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf.

However, her journey to independence was not without its obstacles – she also had her fair share. Navigating her daily route to work posed significant challenges until she met Mandla Mathebula, an orientation and mobility practitioner from the SA Guide-Dogs Association.

Together, they embarked on a journey of mutual learning and trust, determined to overcome the odds.

With the help of a sign language interpreter, Tshabalala learned to master the white cane, a symbol of her newfound freedom. Mathebula taught her essential visual skills, such as navigating traffic lights and walking safely in the evenings.

The school’s principal even provided a reflective vest to enhance her visibility at night.

“Losing your vision is not the end; it’s the beginning of a new journey. If you can dream it, you can achieve it,” said Mathebula.

Today, Tshabalala’s white cane is a beacon of hope in her community and attests to the impact of the support provided by the SA Guide-Dogs Association.

“Her story inspires us to dream big and never give up,” said Nicole Barrots, the marketing coordinator of the association.

The Give-a-Cane Campaign aims to raise funds to provide 500 white canes to visually impaired individuals like Tshabalala. Barrots advises the Fourways community to join in their national campaign by celebrating Tshabalala’s courage and supporting this worthy cause.

“By donating a minimum of R50, your donation will enable us to continue our vital work, ensuring that we can train more clients of all ages, provide more assistive devices to those in need, and uphold our commitment to freedom and independence.”
