SA Guide Dogs needs help with ‘Give a Cane’ campaign

The association launched a nationwide campaign, to raise R550 000 to purchase canes for the blind.

This year marks a significant milestone for the SA Guide Dogs Association’s College of Orientation and Mobility in Paulshof.

For 50 years, they have been pioneers in training practitioners, with over 180 trained professionals who have impacted the lives of more than 100 000 visually impaired individuals.

Over the past decade alone, the association provided approximately 7 000 assistive devices and gave ten years of direct services.

In this spirit, they are excited to launch the ‘Give a Cane’ campaign, a nationwide endeavour aimed at raising R550 000 to purchase canes for the 500 visually impaired people on their waiting list.

The regional marketing manager Nicole Barros said the campaign will be running from April 8 to July 18.

“We are, therefore, asking our valued donors and the public to get involved. By contributing a minimum of R50, your donation will enable us to continue our vital work, ensuring that we can train more practitioners and clients for at least another 50 years. We can then also provide more assistive devices to those in need, and uphold our commitment to freedom and independence.”

To switch things up a little bit, Barrots said the community in Fourways can come up with fun and interesting ways to help raise funds for the association to achieve their goal between the set dates.

“You can do whatever you want to do. The possibilities are endless! In return, the South African Guide-Dogs Association can offer a Section 18A tax certificate for donations received and support for your fundraising event by promoting it on our social media platforms or a visit with our practitioners.”

Here are a few ideas:

  • Donate R50
  • Donation drive. Each employee at the office donates R50 and appeal to others to do the same.
  • Host a walk-a-thon, step-a-thon or blindfolded activity day at your office, office park, community or school.
  • Host a casual day or dress-up day at your office.
  • Host a lucky draw in your community or office.
