Learners come up with their toppings on Pizza Day

Junior Colleges Sunninghill did not want to miss a very important day of the year when they celebrated National Pizza Day. The school principal, Bev Singh said this has become part of their tradition every year.

“It is always a fun event and forms part of our special days at our school.”

She said they saw the need to celebrate the day because most of the school’s community loves a good pizza.

“The children enjoyed the special day when we helped them to make their very own dessert pizza. This activity encouraged creativity and group work skills. Learners also got to develop sorting skills as they categorised their pizza toppings.”

Sign added, “Each learner made their dessert pizza with their own choice of toppings. They baked it and then enjoyed it. All the staff and learners love pizza, and we make sure to do it monthly. They say, ‘You can’t buy happiness’ but you can buy pizza.”

National Pizza Day, according to the website www.daysoftheyear.com, has unclear origins but it became a firm favourite in the tenth century in Naples, Italy.

“Pizza started as a simple flatbread spread with sauce and sprinkled with cheese. It is likely that the first people who made this as a creative snack for their families had no idea the sensation that they had whipped up and what it would become. This is when records first show the presence of what has now become modern-day pizza.”

• In 1889, Queen Margherita visited Naples with her husband King Umberto. The couple grew tired of their diet, which consisted exclusively of French haute cuisine. They tried a local pizza that was delivered to them.
