Residents clean up after sangoma
As they cleaned, residents were left feeling uncomfortable with the mess that was left behind by people from different provinces.
After the well-known religious group from East London finished using the river, they allegedly left it in a mess. Lee Klette and Bryan Brombacher from the Glenferness Residents Association organised a clean-up project to return the river to as close to the pre-visitor state as possible.
According to Ward 94 councillor, David Foley, who helped clean the river, the area was being cleaned from Chattan through to Lonehill on October 19. “The residents got some money together and started the cleanup process on October 16. More than 150 bags of waste were filled with litter and other waste products.”
The Review received a comment from the JMPD. According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, this is a yearly congregation of church members. “The JMPD officers within Region A were present to ensure that there were no traffic laws that were flouted. The roadway was open at all times during the event. The matter was brought up in the law enforcement task team committee meeting within Crum on October 17 and it was decided that a holistic approach towards this event is to be implemented and the city’s approval be obtained before these types of events and this specific one.”
He concluded that Crum within Region A will take the lead in engaging the leaders of the Church.
