Operation Shanela yields 19 arrests at Douglasdale streets.

A targeted operation named Shanela was executed by the local police in Douglasdale, resulting in 19 suspects being apprehended for various criminal offences. The operation was carried out across the entire area, bringing a sense of relief and enhanced security to the community.

The suspects taken into custody during Operation Shanela were involved in a range of criminal activities that have plagued the neighbourhood. The crimes included rape, fraud, possession of suspected stolen copper, drunk driving, drug possession, common robbery, dealing in liquor, and shoplifting. The operation demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement authorities to combat crime and ensure the safety and well-being of residents in Douglasdale.

Captain Tsietsi Phora said, “Among the arrested suspects, six were arrested during Operation Shanela which started on July 28 to 29 where the police together with Community Police Forum (CPF), neighbourhood watch and Community Security Emergency Response Team (CSERT) joined hands in preventing crime and ensuring visibility in high-density areas that include the informal settlements, conducting vehicle checkpoints and compliance inspections at liquor outlets.

Rape, a heinous crime that deeply impacts individuals and communities, was among the offences for which suspects were detained. By apprehending individuals involved in such serious offences, Operation Shanela sends a strong message that sexual violence will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face the full force of the law.

“The arrested suspects will appear at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court soon. The police will continue with these operations to ensure that the community of Douglasdale feel safe,” said Phora.
