Representatives from the City of Joburg are currently outside of Leeukop Prison where they plan to disconnect services after the prison failed to adhere to a payment arrangement that has previously been put in place.
Tebogo Moraka, Group Chief Financial Officer for the City of Joburg confirmed that an amount of R9.6m was outstanding for water use. According to Moraka, prison management had made promises to make certain payments during consultations on August 10. The visit today was to ensure that those payments were made, failing which, the decision would be made to disconnect the prison.

At the time of publication though, prison officials had not yet allowed city officials onto the premises.
Moraka acknowledged that there were procedures that needed to be followed in order to enter.

According to Moraka the services would be disconnected, until such time as an acknowledgement of debt is received. “Leeukop is an organ of state, so we expect them to enter into an acknowledgement of debt. Once that is done, they must honour it and start paying for the services. We will reconnect them once they either acknowledge the debt, or make a payment of monies due.”
This is a developing story. More information will be published once it becomes available.
