Water bubbling on road leaves residents concerned

The residents said that so much water has been lost as a result and were not sure of what caused it.

At first Morris Zack thought it must have been one of his neighbours who was cleaning their swimming pool when he saw water flowing on Segovia Road, not far from his house in Dainfern Ridge.

Initially, it was the least of his worries but then he realised that it has been going on for far too long. Zack decided to go and check where the water came from. It was not at all what he had expected.

“It is water bubbling from a crack in the road. It started leaking on Friday but I reported the matter on Monday because I thought it was just one of my neighbours cleaning their swimming pool and it would stop eventually,” he explained.

But little did he know that it will raise even more concerns for him. The section where the water is bubbling from in the road has become like a sponge. “We cannot use the road because it is spongy and that is not really safe. We suspect that there might be a sinkhole. Luckily, my street is not that busy and we have a park where kids can go and play.

“We don’t know how long it has been leaking in the ground because when you step on it, it bounces. But they have put up cones and barrier signs so that the residents can see that the road has been closed. But now, they can’t get into their driveways, that is how we are affected. Luckily, the road is also on the other side of the traffic lights.”

Zack added that they have lost a lot of water as a result. Fourways Review reached out to Joburg Water with the reference number from the residents to confirm if the matter is being attended to.

Joburg Water’s media spokesperson, Nolwazi Dlamini said that she would respond to questions. No comment was received by the time of going to print.
