Paulshof community comes together for Spruit clean-up effort

Residents of Paulshof have joined forces for a river clean-up initiative to keep the river clean and safe for both people and wildlife. The community effort involves local businesses, children, and the elderly, and has fostered a sense of community spirit.

Residents of Paulshof are taking matters into their own hands by cleaning up the Sandspruit River that runs through their community. The initiative is aimed at keeping the river clean and preserving the environment for future generations.

The community has been working tirelessly to remove litter and debris from the riverbed, making it a cleaner and safer place for both people and wildlife.
Children have been participating in the clean-up, earning community hours for their schools. Some residents have offered the services of their gardeners to take part in the effort.
Resident Kerry Mawson said, “When a community comes together there is a shared sense of accomplishment and connection that has a large influence on residents and businesses alike. It was great to see councillor Vino Reddy and his team join us this month.

“Most of the items collected are recyclable materials like glass and plastic, as well as bottle tops which end up being used towards wheelchair donations once enough of them have been collected. It’s amazing to see everyone getting involved.
“The monthly spruit clean helps to keep property values up. We need more hands to ensure the green spaces of this beautiful suburb remain usable for residents as we have a national clean water crisis which affects everyone.”

Reddy said, “I would like to commend the Paulshof Residents and Ratepayers Association and the security companies for their environmental commitment to cleaning and maintaining the riverine systems… Having been previously involved and actively participating in river clean-ups over several years, the DA Ward 93 branch and I are proud to be associated with what has now become a monthly event.”

He added participating in these clean-ups not only gave him and the residents a cleaner river but a better living environment and allowed everyone to give back to the community.
“I would like more residents to join in and actively participate in these clean-ups so we can widen the scope of the clean-up, thereby opening the river systems for more social and lifestyle activities. Covid-19 was a major catalyst preventing people from using the pathways along the spruit for running, cycling and walking and I’d like to see these pathways opened again.

“We live in a beautiful environment and it should be appreciated by all in its natural splendour.”
