Breaking the silence: Victoria shares her story of gender-based abuse to raise awareness and support others

After Victoria Melasi attended a domestic violence event hosted by Douglasdale police, she made the courageous decision to break her silence and share her experience of gender-based abuse. In doing so, she hopes to raise awareness and support for others who may be going through similar ordeals.

“I experienced abuse growing up due to the absence of my parents. My brother took advantage of me and subjected me to abuse. When I confided in my grandmother, her response was dismissive, asking what I knew about abuse. This incident has had a lasting impact on me,” explained Melasi.

The repercussions of this traumatic experience continue to affect her today. “When I am in the wrong, I detest being shouted at. This extends to my workplace, where even a mistake can trigger my fear of being held accountable. I struggle with anger, and I fear that one day it may cost me my job.”

Furthermore, the abuse has left its mark on her relationships. “I have developed a mentality that I will always be subjected to abuse until the end. When my boyfriend reprimands me, it awakens my anger.”

Victoria’s decision to share her story of gender-based abuse is an act of bravery that has the potential to make a difference in the lives of others. By shedding light on this often-hidden issue, she aims to raise awareness and highlight the prevalence of gender-based abuse.

It is essential to acknowledge that speaking out about abuse is a challenging and emotional process. Victoria shared that a woman’s well-being is of utmost importance, and she should have a support system in place as she shares her story with the community. This support can come from trusted friends, family members, and professionals such as therapists or counsellors.

Ultimately, Victoria’s decision to break the silence and share her experience is a powerful step toward her healing and the creation of positive change within her community.
