Burst pipe takes a complex apart

A burst pipe under a residential complex road has been giving residents a tough time.

A burst pipe under Munro Crescent, inside Airdlin Place residential complex, has caused major water loss, as well as damage to a municipal road, angering residents.

The leak has been sending clean water straight into the stormwater drain for more than three months.
According to Shayne Griffin, a resident in the complex, the road is a municipal road and the burst, visible as a crack in the road, was first reported to Joburg Water on January 20.

The leak was reported several more times as the situation became worse, with months of no response from officials. “It has been a frustrating situation as the road keeps getting worse, we have not been able to get a response from Johannesburg Water or their depots. The only thing we keep hearing is that they will escalate until we were told the system was down due to upgrades or maintenance.

“On March 30, when the system was supposed to be back online, they still could not help with anything,” said Griffin.

The burst pipe is not only affecting residents but also sends hundreds of litres of clean water straight down the drain. With over a month of leakage, the residents are grateful the drainage system is working properly as some of the houses would have flooded. The incident highlighted the issue of aging infrastructure Johannesburg Water is faced with.

“The City of Johannesburg has an ongoing problem of aging infrastructure, which is causing various issues, such as frequent pipe bursts and leaks, which lead to water outages,” said Johannesburg Water’s Nolwazi Dhlamini, commenting previously on the issue of constant pipe bursts.

Fourways Review reached out to Dhlamini on April 3 for an update. Reference numbers were provided but her feedback was not received by the time of going to print.
