Young meerkat in 1st Fourways Scouts group assists local mental health clinic

A six-year-old meerkat scout in Fourways collected enough items to help individuals at a Germiston-based home for the handicapped.

A young meerkat in the 1st Fourways Scout Group has come to the aid of a home for the handicapped.

Denlan van der Veen (6) collected bread bag tags and bottle tops in order to exchange them for wheelchairs. His collection resulted in three wheelchairs being donated to the Avril Elizabeth Home for
Handicapped Individuals in Germiston. One has already been handed over. Denlan said he joined the scouts because he liked ‘the Meerkat song, and I like to help people’. “I got to help people, so I feelhappy about the wheelchairs.”

How it works: The tags and bottle tops are taken to a recycling plant when the collector believes they have enough. The recycling plant pays the wheelchair company the value per kg in bottle tops and tags. Bread Tags for Wheelchairs SA is the company that receives the money.

First Fourways Scout den leader Xaviera Koeberg said young Denlan was well deserving of his champion badge for his efforts. It is the highest badge that can be achieved by a meerkat. “Denlan has also flown the meerkat banner, and in so doing, the scout banner, very high. He attends meetings and always participates. He also worked tirelessly in achieving many ‘interest’ and ‘challenge’ badges,” she said.
Denlan said while in the scouts he wants to learn how to help the earth.
