Sunninghill preschool invites grandparents to school

Grandparents and children enjoyed a fun day together at Junior College Sunninghill.

Junior College Sunninghill hosted a Grandparents’ Day to foster an even greater bond between grandchildren and their grandparents.

The children at the Sunninghill preschool enjoyed various activities with their grandparents. This included planting, to signifying that ‘what the kids plant in themselves is what they will grow’. Most of the children were visibly excited to see their grandparents at the school. While others were a bit shy when they saw cameras and flashing lights from the Fourways Review.

Teacher Diasha Padayachee spoke about the significance of hosting such gatherings. “I see the results in class. My learners tell me stories of what their grandparents taught them and what knowledge their grandparents pass on to them. And the nice thing about hosting such an event is that kids learn about different cultures, they also learn about diversity and respecting other people’s cultures,” said Padayachee.

Principal Bev Singh was at the heart of organising the day and was very interactive with the grannies and grandpas. She said, “This gathering shows the kids how much their grandparents are present in their lives and they get to share this moment.”

A happy learner Lesedi Ndlovu (5) said, “I love my grandparents because they buy me sweets. They give me hugs and kisses.”

One of the grandparents, Bernadine Dunstan said, “It’s a beautiful gathering. It’s nice to meet other parents and to see the children play together. And it is a very special day for me because I am here for my only granddaughter.”
