Pedestrian bridge collapses at Lonehill Dam following recent heavy rain

JRA said that a service provider has been appointed to fix the collapsed wall and prevent further damage to the dam.

Ward 94 councillor David Foley said Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) has finally appointed a service provider to rebuild a collapsed structure at Lonehill Dam.

This was after Lonehill Dam’s wall structure collapsed in August last year which saw the local dam losing a lot of water.

“I have written a letter to the city officials and MMCs responsible in a bid for a speed intervention on the matter. In their response, JRA said a service provider has been appointed to fix the collapsed wall and prevent further damage in the dam structure,” Foley said.

Environment manager at Lonehill Residents Association (LRA), Nadeem Abrahams said the low water level at the dam was putting lives of water species at risk. “The dam is losing a lot of water as a result of this collapsed structure. This has led to the collapse of the pedestrian bridge following heavy rain on December 30. We are really concerned with the state of the dam which is home to thousands of water species.”

Operations manager for roads and stormwater planning at JRA, AndréNel said the service provider that will fix the collapsed structure has been appointed.

“We understand the urgency of this matter, but will not deviate from the correct legislative protocols to be followed in order to get this matter resolved. We will instruct the engineer as part of his first instruction to continue with the process of filling the voids formed with sandbags until such time that we have finalised the design and funding is allocated to this project to commence with implementation.”
