Principal of Crawford shares Grade 1 parenting 101

Principal Gordon Ewen informs Grade 1 parents that having to explore the school facility with them and reaching out to their teachers is the gate way to a less overwhelming school expierence for both the parents and learners.

With many young learners gearing up for their first year of Grade 1, the experience can be overwhelming especially for the parents who are new to the school parenting world.

Principal Gordon Ewen of Crawford International Lonehill Preparatory shared key factors for parents to keep afloat with the new challenges that they might face.

According to Ewen, Grade 1 learners are quick to adapt to the transition while parents, on the other hand, are prone to handle the change completely differently.

“On the first day there might be a few nerves, but once the children are settled in and more or less know where to go, they are at ease and ready for this new chapter,” said Ewen.

As stated by the principal, there are three core factors which parents can use to transition smoothly to the changes where they can accept the growth of their child:

  • Explore the school facilities with your child

Give your child the opportunity to explore the new school facilities and grow in them. If possible, arrange a visit to the school grounds before school starts.

  • Reach out to your child’s Grade 1 teacher

Having a relationship with your child’s Grade 1 teacher can be very beneficial, as you will have access to more information and communication. Attend parent evenings and information sessions.

  • Give your child a bit more independence

Assist your child to pack their school bag, this will give your child independence as they enter the new phase of their educational career. Support your child, but don’t put too much pressure on them to move in a certain direction, as they are also still finding their feet and deciding what they like and don’t like.

“When your child tells you that they are ready to walk to class on their own, let them, it is their way of showing you that they are okay. Each child will eventually reach their full potential. Remember to refrain from comparing your child to others, prioritise them,” concluded Ewen.
