Recent heavy rains help wash away oil that recently spilt into Lonehill Dam from storm water

Residents association environment team talks with a company that has organic microbial products that can help dissolve the oil trapped in the hard-to-reach areas

Environment manager at Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) Nadeem Abrahams said the recent heavy rain has helped them in the process of mopping up oil in Lonehill Dam.

This was after oil from storm water pipes spilt into the dam early November leaving dozens of fish and other water species dead.

He said the process of cleaning the dam was on track and has helped save the lives of other water species in the dam.

“We have successfully mopped up the residual oil from the surface of the dam making it safe once again. Thanks to the recent rains that also assisted in flushing out some of the oil. We have, however, noted that we cannot get all the oil cleaned between the reeds,” Abrahams said.

“We are, however, working hard to have every drop of oil removed from the dam. We are in talks with a company that has organic microbial products that can help to dissolve the oil trapped in the hard-to-reach areas. The microbial are all organic and pose no harm to the wildlife and aquatic species in the dam.”

He local urged residents to refrain from throwing chemicals and toxic substance into storm water pipes to preserve the environment.
