Miss Umoja 2022 winner hopes to make a positive contribution to the community
Miss Umoja 2022 says she was motivated by her friend to participate in this year’s competition.
The winner of the Miss Umoja 2022 beauty pageant, Minenhle Mabunda (17) could not hold back her tears of joy after she was crowned in this year’s competition.
This was after the Daily Bread non-profit organisation hosted its annual Miss Umoja beauty pageant on October 29 at Leaping Frog Shopping Centre.
The competition is aimed at empowering local girls with different skills and creating awareness about the scourge of teenage pregnancy.
A total of 10 contestants from different parts of Johannesburg North made it to the finals and got an opportunity to impress the judges.
Minenhle who is a Grade 11 learner at Sunrise Secondary School in Diepsloot said she was motivated by her friend to participate in this year’s competition. “I am happy to be crowned the winner of Miss Umoja 2022. Last [year] I attended this event to support a friend who was part of it. She told me that the competition was not about looks or body size. I was inspired and decided to participate this year.”
She said her dream was to build a youth centre in which young girls can be taught the importance of self-love, education and independence. “Many young girls, especially those in disadvantaged communities like rural areas and townships fall into a trap of getting pregnant at a very young age because there are no facilities in which they can spend time and how to improve their lives. I hope this dream will be realised one day so that we have fewer teenagers falling pregnant.”
Founder and chairperson of Daily Bread non-profit organisation thanked community members who came out to support the event.
