‘My experience here is definitely the reason I chose nursing’ as told by a Fourways student nurse

Student nurse at Life Fourways Hospital, Masana Khoza has nothing but positive memories since starting her nursing journey at the hospital.

Masana Khoza is a 19-year-old student nurse who has just started her career at Life Fourways Hospital this year.

She shared some of her experiences and answered the most commonly asked question she’s asked: why did she become a student nurse? She writes:

The first thing anyone always wants to know from a student nurse is: ‘Why did you choose nursing as a career while so young?’

As a child, I only wanted to be a nurse because they look ‘so cool in their uniforms’ as our then-generation would say. They are people we respect in the community and are lifesavers.

An example, at the age of nine I went to the hospital to visit my grandfather and saw this woman on the floor running up and down to save and make the person I value’s life better.

As I grew older, I understood myself as someone with multiple personalities, loving and wanting to work with people. I enjoyed learning new things that are health-related. I always wanted to know what the best diet was that I can follow to be healthy and took my time to read about the side effects of any medication that I got. I wanted to do something in my career that is challenging, interesting and makes life better for other people’s daily lives.

Finally, 2022 came and I got the opportunity to study towards this career I always wanted at Life West Rand Learning Centre. Being one of the lucky students, I got to do my practicals at Life Fourways Hospital.

Coming to do my practicals was one of the things I was scared about, especially as someone coming fresh from high school and with no experience working in a hospital. Little did I know, I was soon to forget all that with the amazing staff and team of Life Fourways.

Having worked in the hospital for the first time, I’ve seen how beautiful and clean it is from the outside. There are smiles throughout the hospital and very kind staff members who are always willing to assist, who welcomed us and made sure we understood the entire Life Healthcare group.

I experienced working in the ward for the first time where the unit managers introduced us to their culture, family and orientation of the ward. The staff assisted us in meeting our objectives, up to walking out from the ward to the pharmacy, kitchen and everywhere else.

This month marks almost 10 months of being part of the Life Fourways team and I still say that I’ll never trade this career for anything. It feels amazing knowing I am making life better for someone else.
My experience here is definitely the reason I chose nursing.
