The second edition of the Auto & General Cross Triathlon at Steyn City is set to have new additions to the race next year February

With the success of the first Auto & General Cross Triathlon at Steyn City, CEO of Steyn City Giuseppe Plumari has announced new additions to next year’s race.

With the inaugural event a success, Steyn City has announced the return of the Auto & General Cross Triathlon to take place on February 23 next year.

Giuseppe Plumari, CEO of Steyn City Properties, said news of the launch of the event made its way among South African athletes. “The event was warmly welcomed, especially as there tends to be a dearth of such events in Gauteng – which means that local athletes incur significant costs travelling to national races. We realised that with our 2 000 acres of indigenous parkland and outstanding amenities – including the requisite facilities for a 600m swim, 35km cycle, and 7km run – our award-winning parkland residence is perfectly placed to add to the annual sporting calendar,” he said.

Plumari explained that while the swim takes the form of a double lap in Steyn City’s 300m lagoon, the cycle race route is laid out along the development’s 50km MTB track, and a portion of Steyn City’s 45km floodlit promenade has been set aside for the run.

While the triathlon is the ideal challenge for serious solo athletes, the format of the event also allows corporate entries. It is also possible to enter as a team where teammates can decide which of the race legs of swimming, running or cycling, they would like to participate in, meaning entrants can take part in the discipline that panders to their strength.
Half distances have also been added to next year’s event, making it possible for participants to swim 300m, take part in a 20km off-road cycle and 3,5km run.
Plumari said that the new addition makes triathlons more accessible to more people, including those who are just getting started in their triathlon careers.
“We’re also hoping that the shorter distances may encourage participation from families, as these distances can easily be conquered by children aged 12 and older, and this speaks to the family-centric lifestyle that is so much a part of Steyn City,” he said.

Ricardo Coetzee, Head of Auto & General Insurance said there is major delight at being part of the event as a title sponsor.
“The inaugural Auto & General Cross Triathlon was a spectacular success, and it promises to be even better in 2023. If you are looking for an unparalleled, world-class experience, this is it,” he said.
Entries for the event have been open since October 17, with early bird rates of R950 per solo offered to first entrants.
