JMPD arrest illegal informal trader for assault

An illegal informal trader who was based at the intersection of William Nicol and Sandton Drive was arrested for assaulting two members of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and for damaging property.

Metro police arrested an illegal informal trader for damage to police property and assault on police officials.

During an informal trading by-laws operation on September 23, two Metro officers approached the informal trader and requested a permit for his business. The man who was selling goods at the intersection of William Nicol and Sandton drives failed to provide the documentation. This resulted in the officers instructing him to leave with his goods.

The informal trader allegedly responded by headbutting the male police officer. As the female officer tried to intervene, the trader punched her repeatedly in the face.

As the officers made their way to their patrol vehicle to call for backup, the trader apparently began to damage the vehicle by throwing rocks at it.

Once backup arrived, the suspect fled the scene.

During a follow-up on September 30, officers who were patrolling the area apprehended the trader at the same location.
“The department’s management condemns this vicious attack on the officers. We hope that the court takes this matter seriously and that the suspect faces the full might of the law for attacking law enforcement officials who were legally executing their duties,” said the spokesperson of Metro police Xolani Fihla.

According to the spokesperson, the man appeared in court on October 3.
