Chuseok Festival organisers stunned by positive response from members of the community

Event organiser said the Chuseok festival can be traced back to Korea’s past as an agrarian society.

Residents of Johannesburg flocked to Fourways to sell, exhibit and buy different products at the first South African Korean Chuseok Festival.

The festival, held at Straight Shopping Centre in Fourways on September 10, received a positive response from members of the public and the organisers have promised an even better-organised event next year.

Festival organiser and owner of Fourways Kokoro Market which sells Asian products, Danny Lee said the festival could be traced to Korea’s past as an agrarian (agricultural) society when on September 10 during a full moon, families gathered to enjoy time together and give thanks to their ancestors for the plentiful harvest.
He said they were surprised by the positive response from community members who had come out in their numbers.

“We genuinely did not expect so many people to show up, we were expecting a maximum of 800 people and it was far over 1 000 people. Some of the vendors sold out so quickly, one vendor sold out within two hours. We are truly humbled and thankful for the support people of Joburg showed to us.”
