Local teams battle it out at Riveside View Spring Day netball mini tournament

The organiser said the tournament was aimed at encouraging local girls to get involved in sport.

To get the local youth off the streets, Riverside-based netball clubs hosted a Spring Day netball mini tournament on September 3.

Three local netball clubs, Black Jaguars, Dynamites and Mighty Blues battled against each other.

Black Jaguars netball team beat Dynamites and Mighty Blues to win the tournament in the U17 category while the Dynamites dominated the U13 category after beating Black Jaguars and Mighty Blues.

Tournament organiser and community activist Aronn Lekgwathi said the tournament was aimed at encouraging local girls to get involved in sport.

“We have many young people in the area who spend their time roaming the streets and some end up doing wrong things because they don’t have anything to do. I strongly believe that sports can play a big role in preventing youth from partaking in criminal activities and falling pregnant at a young age.”

He said the three teams have recruited many youngsters who had nothing to do during their free time.

“Despite the lack of sports facilities in the area, these three teams have made a huge impact in taking young girls off the streets. We would like government authorities to come to the party to build sports facilities for our youth.”
