Sunninghill DJ has started her DJ career on a high note

Moving to Johannesburg in January this year, Sunninghill’s DJ Naztee is ready to rule the DJing world.

A Sunninghill DJ who frequently rocks a Paulshof pub shares her experiences of coming through the ranks since completing her time at DJ school at DJ Mix Club in Randburg.

Nazley Thomas (30), known by her stage name DJ Naztee said she was still new in the industry and hoped to make a name for herself after moving to Johannesburg this year after living in the Middle East for six years.

Get to know more about her journey in this Q&A:

Q: How did you get into becoming a DJ, and how long have you been in the industry?
I have always been fascinated by watching DJs in action. Being a woman in the education field, especially in school leadership, didn’t seem like a realistic aspiration as I feared I could never be taken seriously doing both. It was in March when I thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful for young girls to see it’s possible to be an academic and rock in the entertainment industry?

Q: How would you describe your sound to someone?
I would definitely describe myself as a hip hop and R&B DJ. When describing my sound, I would definitely say nostalgic. On a night at one of my gigs, you are sure to sing along to songs from all seasons of your life.

Q: As a woman in the DJ space, there is a massive growth in the number of women coming to the scene. What do you make of this?
It is a tough and unsafe industry, and women have to work twice as hard to be even considered half as good. I love how the amapiano genre has boomed and many women such as Uncle Waffles and DBN Gogo are truly representing out there. I am excited to see such female representation come through in the hip hop and R&B genre.

Q: What are some releases you’re working on people can look forward to?
I honestly love the spontaneous nature of ‘reading the room’ and watching people feel like each song was chosen just for them. That brings me the greatest joy. I am not sure what may develop in the future, I am happiest playing what I know people want and watching them enjoy it.

Q: Do you have a dream place you’d like to perform at?
I look forward to the road ahead and playing for crowds who have the old-school funk as I do. There are quite a bit of hip hop and R&B events around Joburg these days and I look forward to being in their line-up, alongside my favourites like Ryan The DJ and Sebastian Dark.
