My Pet and Me: Vanessa Smith and little Mila

A six-year-old long-haired chihuahua, Mila has taken on the unofficial role of being a therapy dog at mom’s school, Unity College.

Staff member at a local school Vanessa Smith has welcomed many learners into the world of her lovely long-haired chihuahua, Mila.

“Mila is six years old and I have had her since she was eight weeks old. She has been coming to Unity College since eight weeks old. Mila knows she is the ‘Belle of the ball’ and she loves to be a part of the whole school pack,” she said.

Mila is a frequent visitor at Unity College, and has been dubbed the unofficial ‘therapy dog’ at the school. Some of the activities she enjoys getting up to while at the school include being involved with the learners during events in many different ways.

“Mila’s favourite thing is coming to school. She wishes there were never school holidays. She loves to dress up for all of the events and celebrations we have at school and to participate in everything with the children.”
She added that Mila’s unique personality is different from the usual chihuahua. “I think Mila is unique because she breaks the convention of what a chihuahua’s personality is. Mila is sociable, patient, and loving. She is very receptive to the needs and moods of the children and enjoys calming anxious children or bringing a smile to sad children.

“She takes her role as ‘therapy dog’ very seriously and is always willing to interact positively – whether it’s listening to reading activities or participating in various lessons. She even knows where the children are supposed to be at break times and will guide them to the correct place,” she concluded.
