Community addressed on crime statistics in the Sandton precinct

Residents were joined by Sandton police, CPF, JMPD and ward councillors to discuss various safety and crime issues in areas such as Sunninghill, Rivonia, Edenburg and surrounds.

Community members addressed their safety concerns at the second Imbizo evening with police and their community policing forum (CPF) in Morningside.

Sandton police officers were joined by the JMPD and Ward 93 councillor Vino Reddy and Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford where they addressed previous concerns in the communities on August 17.
Statistics of crimes, ranging from common robbery to business robbery, were presented by the station’s Warrant Officer Trevor Rama. The statistics, captured between August 1 and 15, informed the community when various crimes had taken place as well as the days of the week.

A number of issues raised included noise complaints near the Rivonia and Edenburg areas that will be investigated, and smaller areas in the wards being targeted for crimes.
Savika Armed Response said there had not been much crime reported in the Sunninghill area, but still advised residents to be careful when travelling.

Reddy added that he would be in touch with police regarding smash-and-grab concerns in the area. “We have the smash-and-grabs on Witkoppen Road, and we are engaging with the police to have continued presence between 07:30 and 08:30. It’s generally traffic coming down from Fourways and the cars on the decline of the road and not at the traffic light,” he said.

“We ask that people not be on their phones and be careful of their possessions. Keep valuables in the boot and be wary of the people walking on the islands. We don’t want an incident where someone is shot.”
The meeting concluded with questions and issues raised by the attendees to be answered by the security personnel. The next meeting’s date and time will be discussed in due course.
