Douglasdale CPF Chairperson aims to make a difference in her community

Lizzy Mabena joined the CPF in 2017 and was elected as the chairperson in 2019.

Over the last few years, Lizzy Mabena has committed her time and energy to make her community a better place for everyone residing in it.

Mabena is the executive chairperson of the Douglasdale Policing Precinct CPF. Despite putting so much energy and time into her community, Mabena is also the founder and managing director of a fibre and construction company called Zedek Fibre. She is also a mother and a wife.

She has been part of the Douglasdale CPF since 2017 and got involved when she moved into her neighbourhood in Bloubosrand. Mabena said she saw an unattended child that was almost hit by a car while roaming the street – this led her to the nearby informal settlement.
“So I got involved in the settlement in terms of donations.”

Mabena is a pillar of the community and goes out of her way to try and ensure that it is a more comfortable and safer place to stay in.
She was initially nominated by her community to be the chairperson and was successfully elected in 2019, but her journey with the CPF began in 2017. “I started getting more involved with the community, understanding the needs of the community and the lack of service delivery from local municipalities.

“That is in essence how I got involved in community initiatives and gradually grew into the CPF.”
She describes the CPF as the link between the police and the community. She also describes the CPF as a non-sexist, non-religious and apolitical organisation that involves people from all walks of life.

The chairperson is usually in the seat for five years. Though Mabena loves being the chairperson, she explained that she wants to pass on the baton to the next leader.
“Working for a community is a calling and a service to the community.”
