Taxis have an outlet

FOURWAYS - Taxi trouble peaked among Fourways motorists last week but a silver lining is on the horizon.

The intersection of Uranium Road, Mulbarton Road and William Nicol Drive caused a stir as taxis were reportedly jumping ahead of the lines. While motorists tooted at this, Fourways Review enquired how well the taxi holding facility at Fourways Mall is working.

In February, the shopping centre tried to unite all public transport into a designated area, in the car park in front of Fourways Game centre.

Fourways Mall Security Manager Hendrik Denner said this was in order to alleviate congestion caused by vehicles stopping anywhere on the road.

Motorists have still been subjected to taxis stopping randomly and taxis are still parking along the side of William Nicol Drive by the off-ramp to Witkoppen Road, however, not all taxi associations that service the area use the facility.

Denner said meetings were held with all the relevant associations to decide which taxis can use the facility.

The area is used as a holding facility and pick-up and drop-off zone. “The area is safer and there is minimal congestion due to public transport,” said Denner.

The facility is also well maintained and clean. Denner said, “It is the responsibility of the transport associations during the day and that of Fourways Mall in the evenings.”
