Estate Challenge sees Jars of Hope filled for Mandela Day

A new Mandela Day initiative saw three Fourways estates take part in filling jars of soup ingredients to be given to the less fortunate.

Three Fourways estates took part in a new initiative for Mandela Day to fill up empty tummies of the less fortunate.
The Estate Challenge featuring Cedar Lake, Fourways Gardens, and Dainfern Golf Estate saw participants attempt to fill 3 000 Jars of Hope with ingredients to make a hearty pot of soup.

The event was hosted by marketing agency StratDigi, and various businesses sponsoring the event provided the ingredients for the jars.
According to the event organiser, co-sponsor and owner of the marketing agency, Sara Laval, people were always looking for a way to contribute to a cause but do not know where or how to start.

“We hope this will become an annual Mandela Day event and we hope more estates will participate in the future. We were overwhelmed by the support from all three estates. One jar of soup can feed four people,” she said.
The Jars of Hope will be distributed to three charities, with the aim of 12 000 people benefitting from the jars. The charities, Doorway to Dignity, One Small Act of Kindness and People 4 Purpose have feeding schemes in the Fourways and surrounding areas where they will also distribute them to the less fortunate communities.

Co-sponsors of the event, Logitech and Austen Morris Associates said they were proud to be associated with the event, and that the support of local initiatives was a crucial one to help almost 12 000 people, thanks to the efforts of estate residents.
Laval added that a trophy was awarded for ‘the estate that packs their jar quota the quickest, promoting teamwork and general awareness for those who are struggling to survive the winter.

The final results saw a tie between Fourways Gardens and Dainfern. Both estates received R5 000 to donate to their charity of choice, and will share the Estate of Hope Trophy and title.
