Fire threatens three residences in Glenferness
The flames threatened to burn three residences in the area.
A resident burning their garden waste caused a fire in an open veld on Dunmaglass Road in Glenferness on July 9.
According to Adam van Niekerk, chairman of Community Police Sub-Forum 4 of the Midrand CPF, the fire leapt into a nearby veld adjacent to houses on Dunmaglass, Zinnia and on the M71/Main roads.
“The fire burnt through a wetland which has important biodiversity and it damaged security infrastructure,” he said.
Ward 94 councillor David Foley said, “Lots of people assisted, I called the Lonehill Fire Station commander to ensure trucks were dispatched and all was in order. Besides grass, there was no damage reported.”
Foley said burning refuse was a law infringement and residents should call Metro police to address this issue.
He recommended agricultural holdings keep the grass short on their property and outside to create fire breaks because it was the dry season.
Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services confirmed that the fire was reported.
