Padel tennis is making its way to Paulshof

Rivonia Recreation Club based in Paulshof will be ready to welcome padel tennis enthusiasts and interested in the sport on July 23.

A new sport is set to make an appearance at Rivonia Recreation Club from July 23.

Partnering with Padel Lab, two of the bowling greens at the sports club have undergone a transformation to accommodate a new sport making the rounds in the world, padel tennis. The game is similar to tennis and was first played in 1969 in Mexico.

The manager at Rivonia Recreation Club Matthew Bayley said, “Something like this is going to revolutionise this club. Padel Labs is the company putting in the courts at the club, and we’re very excited. So far, there is a lot of progress and we’re excited for the final outcome.

“The courts are open to anybody. There will be a membership fee, but we are still deciding how much it will be per hour. People who are members of the club may have a slight discount to those who are not members.”

Referring to the ongoing discussions of fees to be paid by community members to use the court, Bayley added that there may be a whole separate section for those who want to only pay to use the padel court and not make use of the club’s tennis facilities.

He said there were a number of reasons for bringing padel tennis to Rivonia, with the sport growing more around the world and in the country.

“With this being Padel Lab’s first venue, they want Rivonia to be the marquee venue. Both us as a club and [Padel Lab], we are putting in all the effort we can to make this a world-class venue.”

The club will host a launch of the padel courts on July 23, which is set to provide entertainment for the whole family with activities, food on sale and much more.
