A group of ANCYL handover a memorandum of demands at Megawatt Park

Members of the ANCYL vowed to mobilise more members of the public to join them in their fight to have De Ruyter fired as CEO of the power utility.

Members of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) have vowed to mobilise people to join them in their quest to have Eskom’s chief executive officer Andre de Ruyter fired.

This follows Eskom’s recent announcement to implement Stage 6 load-shedding after workers at the utility embarked on an unprotected wage strike.

A group of ANCYL members staged a protest outside the power utility’s headquarters in Sunninghill demanding that De Ruyter step down from his position following what they described as a spectacular failure to keep the lights on.

Speaking outside Megawatt Park during the handover of a memorandum of demands, member of the ANCYL Kamvelihle Goba said De Ruyter and his team have failed millions of South Africans who trusted them to keep the lights on.

“We came here as young people of South Africa to demand that De Ruyter must step down as Eskom’s CEO with immediate effect. He has dismally failed to keep the lights on. Our country is losing jobs and our economy is suffocating because of the utility’s failure to provide electricity.”

The coordinator of the ANCYL in Tshwane, Fortune Mathabatha said, “This is just the beginning of a national mass action that will lead to De Ruyter being removed as CEO of Eskom. We are going to mobilise members of civil society to join us in this cause. We want De Ruyter and his cabal gone.”

Head of properties at Eskom Amos Mboweni accepted and signed the memorandum of demands and promised that the utility would respond to it in due course.
