Chefs With Compassion call for support for Mandela Day to feed the poor

Will you heed the call to contribute towards #67000 litres of soup for Mandela Day?

Chefs With Compassion (CWC), a non-profit coalition of individuals and organisations, has launched their #67000litres Mandela Day challenge.

The challenge, sponsored by Electrolux, calls on people to register and pledge litres of soup which they will hand out to those in need on July 18.

Last year, the target was smashed with 70 870 litres of soup being made, giving almost 300 000 vulnerable people a much-needed meal across the country.

At the launch of the challenge at the Centre for Culinary Excellence in Auckland Park, chef and president of the SA Chefs Association James Khoza said, “We are thrilled to have so many celebrity chefs and colleagues join us as we embark on the 2022 call for support this Mandela Day.”

Khoza explained how the relationship between CWC and Nosh Food Rescue, who intercept edible food making its way into landfills as waste, has provided over 1.7 million meals to hungry people all over the country.

Nosh collects food from several sources in the city such as farms or the City Deep fresh produce market, hand it to various CWC hubs who cook the food and distribute it to those in need.

Chef Dasen Sarugaser, who has been with CWC since its inception, shared how important it was for society to learn about preventing food waste. “Unlikely ingredients can and should be experimented with, such as his lettuce soup.”
He reminisced about when they received tons of lettuce that was going to spoil, it was added into a hearty soup like one would with spinach. It was apparently delicious.

A lively cooking demonstration, one of several hosted in various locations for the #67000litres launch, demonstrated how random food items many of us have in our homes, from leftovers and other foodstuffs, can be creatively turned into hearty and healthy meals.

Celebrity Masterchef contestant Thembisa Jordaan, one of the ambassadors for the challenge, turned a variety of ingredients from ‘leftover potatoes’, chicken off-cuts and a collection of vegetables into a delicious soup.
