The 4Paws animal shelter struggles to keep its doors open

The animal shelter was on the verge of closure two months ago.

The 4Paws animal shelter is struggling to keep operating due to a lack of funds and donations.

The shelter was founded in 2006 and has assisted many animals over the years. The shelter is currently home to about 300 animals, 37 of which are dogs and the rest are cats. The shelter is located a few minutes away from Makro Riversands.

Tammy Knepscheld, the caretaker of the dogs said it had been a real struggle for the shelter over the past few months and they have been surviving day by day.
“4Paws was actually going to close its doors two months ago, we sent out an email because we were really struggling, we are still struggling,” said Knepscheld. The shelter has reached a point where they would have to stop taking in animals and only focus on the ones in their care.

Running the shelter comes at a big cost, and Knepscheld estimated their vet bills were R40 000 to R50 000 a month. On top of this there were still water and electricity bills to pay.
She said they also visited many townships in Gauteng to see if animals were being cared for.

They also went to KwaZulu-Natal after the floods to see how they could help the animals in the communities there.
Fortunately, the shelter do receive donations such as food, blankets and money from their regular donors.
