A Sunninghill-based traditional folk dance group, Ensemble Balkan SA will jet off to Europe on June 21 to represent the country in the 12th International Calella Folk Dance Festival in Spain.

Lagator said the group had managed to represent the country on international stages despite the lack of sponsorships at home.

He said they were going to the festival in Spain to fly the South African flag high once again although some of the members would not be part of the trip because of a lack of sponsorship to buy plane tickets.

“Ensemble Balkan SA has taken part in different international folklore festivals all over the world, from Spain to Montenegro and even Brazil without any support from the government. We’ve been accepted as a member of the International Council of Organisations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Art and will be competing as representatives of South Africa in their festivals soon to come.”

He said the group was composed of more than 20 dancers from different nationalities based in Johannesburg.

“Only 12 members will be part of our trip to Spain later this month. We are unable to buy tickets and costumes for every member of the group. We appeal to our government and business people to lend a helping hand to sponsor our trip.”
