Community members awarded for ward competition

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe organised a ‘make your pavement beautiful’ competition where residents upscaled and maintained their pavements.

Ward 115 councillor Mark van der Merwe encouraged residents in various suburbs to beautify their pavements, competition style.

Participants from Cedars, Fourways, Bloubosrand, Craigavon, Jukskei Park had to submit before and after photos for the ‘make your pavement beautiful’ competition. The competition ran for four months and winners received their prizes on June 3.

The judges announced the winning residents:

  • First place: Bloubosrand resident Prosper Phiri received R2 000
  • Second place: Jukskei Park resident Helen Randal-Smith received R1 000
  • Third place: Joburg North resident Brett Holding received a service voucher worth R1 000 from Bryanston Auto Tech
  • Special contribution award: Robson Phiri received R500.

Second-prize winner Randal-Smith donated her winnings to Sipho Mabaso and Moscow Ndlovu, who are part of the Jukskei Park Community Forum, to assist them to continue maintenance in the area.

Van der Merwe said there is great importance in these competitions and taking care of your ward. “We try and make the ward a bit better. While we can’t instruct city officials on what to do, what we can do is run competitions like this and get residents to help us,” he said.

There are plans for similar competitions in the next few months to encourage residents to get involved in their community.
