Local karate star to represent South Africa at the World Karate Championships

Local karate star said she was expecting a tough competition in Macedonia.

A Grade 9 learner at HeronBridge College, Jarryd Gartland has been selected to be part of the South African squad that will represent the country at the World Karate Championships in Macedonia in July.

Jarryd started practising karate at the age of seven. She recently competed at a national karate competition and achieved a silver medal in the kumite category.

“I am a quite competitive person in nature and I think that’s what helped me win in kumite early this year. I am expecting a tough completion when I go to Macedonia. I am training hard almost every day to prepare myself for the competition and hoping to bring some medals home,” she said.

“I’m not setting my expectations too high but going there for the world-class experience. I will use the observations I’ve made of different countries to improve my karate skills and tactics.”
