Afrika Tikkun launches soccer and netball league

The Afrika Tikkun Champions league aims to address youth issues in Diepsloot through sport.

The Afrika Tikkun Foundation has launched a soccer and netball league in Diepsloot.
The aim of launching this league is to highlight and bring into focus issues facing young adolescent boys and girls in marginalised and disadvantaged communities.

The launch took place in Diepsloot West 4 at the Wings of Life Centre and had various workshops that covered various topics, such as sexual reproductive health and rights, leadership skills, gender-based violence, child protection, women and young women’s dialogue and men and young men’s dialogue.

The youth empowerment workshops are designed to empower and equip the youth of the community with vital life skills, as well as to assist them in overcoming obstacles they may face in their communities.

In the next five years, the Afrika Tikkun outreach movement hopes to reach another one million people living in impoverished communities.

The outreach programme aims to use soccer and netball as a tool to encourage young people to participate in sports. “It is not a once-off activity. We always look at long-term developmental programmes, that was why we chose sports as most interventions that are done once off lack impact,” said Thomas Taole, the subject matter expert in health and fitness for Afrika Tikkun.

The foundation is working with other organisations such as Grass-roots soccer, Love Life and Cruyff Foundation.

The league will have matches once a month with small tournaments in between.
