Local drifters put on show for locals at Drift Masters South Africa

Drift Masters South Africa put out a second round filled with high-intensity driving at the Rock Raceway to set the tone for the next round in June.

Drivers throughout the country took part in the second round of Drift Masters SA on May 7 and 8 at Rock Raceway.

Participants had tested their skills in the previous round last month at the same venue, with many who itched to get back on the track after a long break due to Covid-19. The weekend was filled with adrenaline and tough competition from local drivers.

Organiser and Jukskei Park resident Kyle Woodward said drivers were hungry for victory on the day, and a number of drivers brought their best at the weekend.
“Our choice of driver for the day goes without a doubt to Danie Herbst who bumped his car not once but twice. After the first accident he didn’t hesitate to get back to work and started fixing his car to continue driving,” he said.

“Danie’s fix found him battling it all the way to top four in our silver cup where, unfortunately, he crashed into the wall. Passionate drifting at its best. Larry Smith and Zein Hussen had a battle for a spot in the top four, where, in total, six runs had to be driven to finally be able to declare a winner.”
There are a number of aspects that go into the archetypical drifting race according to Woodward. He explained how drivers are judged, “Drivers are judged by the following: line in which the driver has been asked to take by the scoring judges, either high line or low line with marked out clipping points. The second is angle and how much angle does a driver have in his line. The more angle, the more points the judges give.

“The third is style. Does the driver look comfortable and does he show off with rear entries, wall tapping and aggressive driving that is consistent?”
The next round is set to take place on June 3 and 4 at the Rock Raceway, and will bring more action according to Woodward.
“There will be drifting at its best, with tandem battles, drivers drifting door to door for a spot on the podium. Anyone who has a love and passion for cars and speed will enjoy our sideways fun.”
