Lonehill Residents Association on a mission to save local dam

The environment manager said the current rehabilitation project commenced in June 2020 with support from the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.

Members of the community are urged to lend a helping hand in the fight against invasive weeds in Lonehill Dam.

The Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) environment manager, Nadeem Abraham said a rehabilitation project commenced in June 2020 with the support from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo who, in turn, received support from the Department of Environmental Affairs.

“The long-term goal is to permanently eradicate all the alien, invasive aquatic weeds in the Lonehill Dam. To achieve this, we have to physically remove the weeds and release biological control agents onto the weeds,” Abraham said.

He said from the start of the project, they were aware that there would be no quick fix to the problem. “We have been regularly posting updates on our social media pages to keep the community informed on the progress with the rehabilitation. We are now using two different types of biological control agents to kill off the alien invasive weeds. The snout-beetle that feeds on the Kariba weeds and the lysathia agents that feed on the parrot’s feather weeds.”

He said, “We are in desperate need of funding for this project to save our dam and we are asking residents and visitors to consider donating to our Enviro Fund to support this project.”
